A Celebration of Life

Thank you, dear family and friends, for your love and support during this difficult time, and for sweet Katy who created this photo-montage to help us celebrate Curtis' life. View it with a prayer in your heart and a smile on your face, in honor of the man that we all love and greatly miss. Please share your memories of Curtis in the comment section below. While you watch the Super Bowl tonight, don't forget to cheer extra loud so that Curtis can hear you from his front row seats up in heaven.

  2. Hey Curtis, I miss you man! I will never forget the last conversation we had at Mayo hospital on Christmas Eve. You told me that you weren't worried about having the heart surgery, but only concerned about your beloved Nadine if you didn't pull through. You were such a fighter, right up until the end, my friend. When I saw you the night of your passing, I whispered to you that I know that families are forever and that you and Nadine would be together again forever. I truly believe you are fine up there in heaven, looking down on all of us and watching over Nadine. I know how much you love each other. From now on when I watch the Super Bowl, or really any football game, I will always remember the good times we had talking about sports. I sure wish it was our Cowboys playing today! Please talk to somebody up there about that for next season, okay? Take care Curtis. I love you man!

  3. One of the great memories I have of Curtis is on the phone. Whenever I'd call to chat with Nadine, he would answer the phone speaking in a British accent and wouldn't break character no matter how hard I'd try to trip him up! And there were a couple of times that he called me out of the blue, in his British accent and all, totally catching me off guard and making me bust up laughing! But then he got serious for a minute... Curtis was just the best husband and cared about Nadine so much, and wanted me to know whenever his sweet wife was feeling down and needed some time out with her best girlfriend. Despite his serious health problems, he worried about Nadine's health and happiness first and foremost because she was always taking care of him and others before herself. I will never forget Curtis' great sense of humor, surpassed only by his love for Nadine. We'll never forget you Curtis and will keep your memory alive!

    Love,
    Lucy

  4. I remember meeting Curtis in high school. We are cousins because his grandmother and my grandfather were brother and sister and his grandfather and my mother were 1st cousins. Of course, it should not have been such a surprise when we met and I responded, "You look just like my brother"!! We didn't know each other before high school, and if Carver and Drewry Mason had not combined to form Magna Vista, who knows when we would have met. Curtis and my brother were like fraternal twins throughout their high school years, which made Curtis my extra brother. I will miss his loud, full, enthusiastic laugh!! I know Curtis is up in heaven enjoying the company of all who went on ahead. I wonder who he is cheering for today in the Superbowl????? I guess I will have to ask him when I see him!! Rest in Peace, Curtis!!! You won't be forgotten!!!

  5. We actually talked about this the day before his surgery. For Ray he wanted Ray to have the win, but he said if it was Ravens against 49ers He would have to go 49ers.

  6. I wish I had more memories than I do of Curtis. But the few times we did hang out I can say I've never seen my Nadine so happy! His smile and laughter were contagious. And I've never seen anyone so positive about life even while fighting for it. Thanks for the smiles brother! You are truly missed and loved!

  8. Now that I have had a chance to clear away the tears from that beautiful video, I would love to say a few things. Thank you by the way, Katy. You did such an AMAZING job!

    Curtis,
I know that we had some ups and downs in our relationship, just like it seems to happen in any family or brother sister relationship. However I truly am grateful that I got the opportunity to get to know the real side of you before you passed. We were lucky enough to spend some “house wife” bonding time together while our spouses worked. I enjoyed our conversations about Nadine and Jaime and talking though our feelings together. I enjoyed that we could talk about the Big Brother season together. It still brings a smile to my face to think about how excited you would get watching all the drama on that show. I appreciate that you made me a priority in your life, because you loved my sister so much. I also will never forget the sweet moments of you reading stories to my sweet Zander. I know that you two had a special bond. You were such a fun Uncle and tried really hard to bond with my boys. Despite your feelings of uncomfort around kids that you expressed and your not knowing how to act around them or what to say all the time. I know that you tried hard because you cared about Nadine and our family. My boys loved spending time with you. It still breaks my heart when Zander will remind me that uncle Curtis died, Huh mom? But then a few hours later will ask if you and Auntie Dine are going to come see him. We love and miss your smile and laughs, not to mention the meaningless debates we would have just for something to argue about. You will be loved and remembered always!
    Your sister,
    Tami

  10. I thank God that I had a chance to share my high school years with you. Although it has been 20 years since we graduated, I think Nat King Cole coined it best "UNFORGETABLE". I wished distance and time would not have separated us but I'm so glad you were so unforgettable to so many other people. Thanks for all the great memories that make me smile, I will always cherish them. Rest in Peace Brother Man.

  11. I remember, as a little girl, playing in my grandmother's yard and seeing a little boy wearing a football helmet learning to ride his bike in his driveway at the house acroos the street. I asked my grandmother if I could go over and play with him. As I neared his driveway, I introduced myself. He never stopped riding, as if I wasn't even there at first. With my feelings hurt, thinking he did not want to play with me, I turned to walk away. And then a trembling voice from behind the helmet spoke up as the wobbling bike continued to zoom back and forth in the driveway, saying "Hi......I'm Curtis". I smiled and turned back around and said "Maybe I can bring my bike over and teach you how to ride it" Still trying to steady himself on his bike, he replied "But you're a girl." LOL. Little did I know it would be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
I remember in primary and elementary school, every Friday Curtis's dad and my dad would co-coach the Bassett High School football team. Curtis and I would sit in the stands enjoying popcorn. I would sit there listening to him trying to explain the plays to me, not having a clue what he was talking about. But I thought "He knows everything there is to know about football because he is a boy."
I remember every morning I would sit looking out the window as the school bus came to a stop infront of Curtis's house. And EVERY morning, he would board the bus with a smile large enough to engulf the universe and pass by my seat and say, "Hi T".
I remember that if I ever had a bad day in highschool and passed Curtis in the hallway, he would stop and rest his hand on my shoulder ans ask "What's wrong T?" And he would assure me that it would get better. And somehow, it always did.
I remember talking with him via FB messaging just two days prior to his surgery. And I remember the bottomless pit I felt in my stomach as I got the news of his passing.
As I sit watching the superbowl this evening, I will remember my neighbor, my classmate, my colleague ..... and most importantly, MY FRIEND.
My life has been enriched for having known such a kind, caring and gentle person. May his spirit live on through the lives of all of those he has touched.

  13. It was so much fun getting to know and hang around Curtis. We had some great conversations and shared a lot of laughs. Once such convo time and again was about his love of American Idol and Katherine McPhee. Every commercial for "Smash" reminds me of him n although I missed last season, I will watch this year's in his honor. :) Rest in peace my friend n we have been cheering loud since the game started!! GO RAVENS!!

  15. That was awesome Nadine, thanks for sharing that, a few tears while watching, he was a great friend to all that knew him, he will be missed by all. I will have to count on him to send me signals from the heavens above when it comes time to picking my fantasy football team, he was also a huge WWE fan but to me it is still the WWF, his sports knowledge was unreal. Didn't think about it until I saw the post by Toni, I bet he did have something to do with the blackout at the SuperBowl just to let everyone know he was watching and enjoying it with all the rest of us.
